Hi, so I already asked about a 40gallon before (as a guest). And I know it's suitable for at least 3 mice. But how many mice at most would y'all have in there? One where they would all be comfortable.
I'm not planning on getting a bunch of mice, I really only want around 3, but I was curious nonetheless.

I would do no more then 3 lady mice in a 40 gallon. Keep in mind you'll want 3 wheels and they take up a LOT of space. Once you add in everything else you are going to find yourself wishing for more room!

Once you add in everything else you are going to find yourself wishing for more room! Personally I don't agree with the one wheel per mouse. I think if you have more than three two wheels is a must. But it is unrealistic if you have a group above three to have a wheel per mouse. I know of people that have 6+ mice and at that point it becomes ridiculous. The point of having multiple wheels in most situations is to prevent aggression. When you have territorial or possible circumstances for fighting. in most cases 1-2 wheels will suffice. If you have a group of four females and two wheels the possibility of all four or even three of the four wanting on the wheel at the same time is slim. Even if it did happen they will be able to work it out.

Flora I agree 6 wheels for 6 mice would be extreme! At one of my foster homes there are 6 girls in a Detolf with only 3 wheels and I have always felt sad for them because all of my male mice run on their wheels all night without having to share or wait their turn but we can't possibly fit 1 wheel per lady mouse so glad to know your thoughts on that!
